RACINE, Wis. — Maintaining its support for young producers who show leadership in the agriculture industry, Case IH awarded nine new Farmall® tractors to the runners-up of the 2014 American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) Young Farmers & Ranchers awards. One of those tractors, a Farmall 55A, will go to Shelby Watson of Brandywine, Md., for being a finalist for the Discussion Meet event. The winners, announced at the AFBF 95th Annual Meeting Jan. 12-15 in San Antonio, Texas, were selected for their knowledge of agricultural topics, ability to discuss these topics with others and public speaking skills.
“Case IH is proud to support these outstanding individuals as they continue to pursue a future in the agriculture industry,” says Zach Hetterick, Case IH Livestock Marketing Manager. “At Case IH, we strive to provide the tools and resources to help young producers develop a strong foundation for their future.”
Watson and her family recently took over the family farm that was originally started by her grandparents. The farm initially produced swine and tobacco, then transitioned to a large-tree nursery that also had livestock, hay, straw, soybeans and corn. Watson is currently in the process of transitioning Robin Hill Farm to a vineyard, complete with a refurbished barn for events and a winery.
“Farm Bureau is truly amazing,” says Watson. “It provides a unified voice for agriculture all across the country.”
Watson ordered her Case IH Farmall 55A from local Case IH dealer Hoober, Inc. and said it is just what she needs to get the vineyard going. The tractor will be used as the main piece of production equipment for her new operation.
“The Case IH sponsorship is a major incentive,” says Watson. “They have been sponsors for a long time and I really appreciate their support.”
Watson’s first involvement in Farm Bureau was in 2004 when she was named first runner-up in the Miss Maryland Agriculture competition. She has revitalized the Young Farmers & Ranchers program in her county, served as the county vice president and participated in many banquets, picnics, silent auctions and state conferences.
Watson works for the Maryland Department of Agriculture as the Agricultural Marketing Specialist and Farmers Market Nutrition Program Coordinator. She is a Class VIII fellow of the LEAD Maryland Foundation, Maryland Winery Association and Maryland Grape Growers Association.
