Top 5 Tips for Sowing Preparation

Top 5 Tips for Sowing Preparation

It’s no secret that a good run of weather isn't all it takes to guarantee a good final crop yield. Sunshine and the right amount of rain may help, but as sowing fast approaches, the first secret to end-of-season success is properly serviced equipment.  Well looked after equipment will help maximise your yield each and every time.

So what should you be doing to ensure your equipment is up to scratch? Gareth Webb, Aftersales Manager for the O’Connor’s Group (a Case IH dealer) let us in on five of his most important tips:

Preparation is the key to success

Preparation is the key to success

1: Let your local dealer check and service your machinery - and don’t leave it too late!
“It can be easy to miss things, but because they know what to look for, the service team can address issues before they become expensive to fix.”

2: Check your seeder boots and points
“They are the most important thing, being the last bit that engages the ground. They’re so simple that often people can forget them, but slightly worn points will have a big impact on seed beds and germination. Worn points and boots can actually be very costly in terms of poor seed placement then germination.”

3: Assess seeder metering systems
“Metering has to be accurate. Some fertilisers and other additives can be very corrosive, so check it over properly and service it regularly. Make sure the rollers are in good order, and that there are no leaks in the hoses and so on.”

4: Make sure the right engine oil is used
“Tractors less than 10 years old need a CI-4 15W/40 extra-high-performance diesel engine oil. There are cheaper oils on the market, such as an CH-4, but these are only suited to machines over 20 years old.”
“People can be tempted to use these oils because they’re cheaper, but they won’t be doing half the lubrication job they should be and are prematurely wearing the engine, rather than looking after your investment.”

5:  Have a preventative maintenance schedule as part of your management process
“There are two reasons for this. One, farmers know they’re ready to roll when they need to start spraying or sowing. The second is about getting a good return on your investment. People can overcapitalise on their gear because they’re allowing for breakdowns and stops. But you don’t have to overcapitalise when you keep it going all the time, and that comes back to preventative servicing.”

So if you’ve got pre-season jitters, take this wise advice on board to ensure your equipment won’t let you down!

And don’t forget, if you're looking for an extra helping hand, Case IH are always here to help. It’s our mission to ensure your equipment will help maximise productivity and minimise downtime, so you can make the most of the upcoming season.

To prove it, we’re offering 0% interest on pre-season service and repairs when farmers spend a minimum of $15,000 (incl. GST) on service and repairs before 30/6/15, including major repairs, such as engine or transmission replacement. It’s our way of wishing you a happy pre-season, from all of us here at Case IH!

How To Keep Your Battery Running Longer

How To Keep Your Battery Running Longer

Using a standard car battery could mean risking your productivity this harvest. But to understand the importance of premium batteries, it’s important to understand why they fail in the first place:

VIBRATION
The number one killer to all batteries. Extended vibration can crack battery welds and plates, causing electrical shorts.

TEMPERATURE
When it’s hot, batteries discharge more and sulfation (which is the crystallisation of Lead Sulfate) reduces the ability for the battery to charge. In cold situations chemical reactions are delayed, restricting power production when it is needed most.

PERIODS IN STORAGE
Agricultural seasonal machines have extended periods in storage.

TOP BATTERY MAINTENANCE TIPS:
Batteries from your Case IH dealer were chosen specifically with your equipment in mind—and built to take a beating in the fields. Here are some tips to keep them in tip-top shape:
  • Keeping your batteries at a full state of charge during dormant periods is the key to fighting sulfation.
  • Starting your equipment and letting it run for 30 minutes does not adequately recharge a discharged battery. The best way to keep your battery fresh is to disconnect the negative cable and use a quality battery charger/maintainer that will keep your battery at a full charge.
  • When your equipment is in use, your battery requires maintenance: Over time, a hybrid alloy battery will lose water from gassing. Adding distilled water back into your battery will extend its life.
  • If you can’t commit to adding water during the season, a maintenance-free battery may be a better option. A maintenance-free battery will also lose water over time, but not as much.
