Meeting Wheat’s New Challenges With Case IH
Jim Tubbs and his son, George, have farmed about 9,000 acres on their operation in western Kansas, which was homesteaded some 100 years ago by their family. However, the Case IH equipment they use is new to them.
Jim says their switch to red equipment started when he tested an Axial-Flow® 8230 combine a few years ago. “It was simple, quiet, didn’t have any vibration and produced a much better sample,” he says. Based on that performance, it’s not surprising they now run two Axial-Flow 8230 combines on their operation.
But their transition to red equipment didn’t stop there. Now the Tubbs family uses Case IH equipment for nearly every application on their operation.
Equipped with a Precision Disk™ 500 air drill matched with a Precision Air™ tow-behind cart, the Tubbses can seed into mostly no-till or minimum-till conditions. “It’s a high-efficiency rig,” Jim comments. “It delivers consistent depth control for consistent germination, and its ability to quickly fold into road transport mode saves time moving between fields.”
Noticing the continued benefit of Case IH equipment on their operation, the Tubbses opted to grow their fleet with a Patriot® 3330 sprayer. Jim says he was reluctant at first to get a sprayer but now calls it “the most profitable piece of equipment we have on the place.”
Equipped with Case IH Advanced Farming Systems (AFS) technologies, including AccuGuide™ autoguidance, AutoBoom™ automatic boom height control and AccuBoom Automatic Boom Section control, the Tubbses estimate the Patriot covers more than 15,000 acres per year. “I really like running this sprayer,” Jim says. “It’s a quiet, comfortable, well-balanced machine, and it’s a good opportunity to look over the crops and land throughout the season.”
In addition, the father and son team run two Case IH Magnum™ series tractors. One with a 1255 Early Riser® planter and one pulling a True-Tandem™ 330 vertical tillage tool. Their newest tractor is a Steiger® 420 Rowtrac™ tractor, which they use on any job that requires traction and power.
The Tubbses credit their helpful and responsive Case IH dealer for their switch to Case IH equipment. When they ordered two Axial-Flow combines, their dealer arranged for a visit to the CNH Industrial manufacturing plant in Grand Island, Nebraska, to experience combine production firsthand. “We met a great group of people there,” Jim says. “They really welcomed us to Case IH.”
Armed with updated equipment and new harvesting capabilities, the Tubbses are optimistic about their future as wheat producers. “More companies want wheat that meets their standards for milling quality and protein and want to be involved throughout the crop production cycle,” Jim says. “We’re ready to meet that challenge.”
